Contra Costa County sheriff’s investigators identified a mother and daughter found unresponsive in a backyard swimming pool in Blackhawk over the weekend, but have held off on pinpointing a cause of death for the pair.

The deceased were identified as 31-year-old Llaneth Chavez of Hollister and her 4-year-old daughter.

The pair were discovered at approximately 3 p.m. Saturday when an unidentified party called to report two people, unresponsive and not breathing, had been discovered in the pool of a home on East Ridge Court. Medical personnel arrived and began life-saving measures, transporting the pair to San Ramon Regional Medical center and ultimately to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek.

Chavez and the child, whose name wasn’t given, died at the hospital.

Autopsies were conducted Monday morning, according to sheriff’s investigators, but the cause of death for both is pending the results of toxicology tests.

  1. How tragic…. and unusual. Were they the only two people in the pool? Child fell in and she was attempting to rescue her?

    • Seems like mother going into pool to get child is most likely. Pool likely quite cold and if you are fully clothed and not a good swimmer yourself I can see how you could panic and drown in a rescue attempt. Very tragic.
