Greg Knapp, a local resident and NFL quarterback coach, remains in critical condition at a local hospital after he was struck while riding his bicycle in San Ramon Saturday.
Knapp was riding with traffic on Dougherty Road north of Monarch Road when a vehicle reportedly veered into his lane and made contact, knocking the cyclist to the ground. Witnesses said Knapp, 58, appeared to have suffered head trauma due to the collision. He was rushed to a local hospital for treatment and at last word remains in critical condition.
The driver of the vehicle, an unidentified 22-year-old Danville man, remained on the scene and was believed to have cooperated with police. Neither drugs or alcohol are believed to have played a role in the collision.
Word of the crash and Knapp’s injury began to appear in sports publications Tuesday after his agent confirmed details of the incident and his condition.
Knapp has been a familiar figure in the NFL since 1997 and has a demonstrated expertise working with developing quarterbacks. He has held positions with the 49ers, Falcons, Raiders, Seahawks, Texans and Broncos. Knapp earned a Super Bowl ring in 2015 season as Denver’s quarterbacks coach and held the same position with the Falcons for the past three seasons.
Knapp was hired to Robert Saleh’s New York Jets staff in January and spent the spring working with rookie Zach Wilson.
Don’t know him personally but keeping him in our thoughts. Its so hard for a family to go through something like this. Is there some sort of investigation?
Out for a Saturday ride. It shouldn’t have to be like this.
Prayers.
“veered into HIS LANE and made contact”!!!
WTF?
Time to lower the speed limit (currently 50) and consider eliminating a traffic lane on that road.
How many riders have we lost to cars just in the past few years. And as long as we continue to allow cars on the same roads as bikes and vice versa good people are going to be hurt or worse. Prayers for this man.
Terrible terrible news. We were so sad to see this. Thinking of him and his family.
