Human remains found in the San Bernardino County desert last month have been confirmed to be those of Erika Lloyd, a Walnut Creek woman last seen on June 14 while leaving for a camping trip in Joshua Tree National Park.

Lloyd told family and friends she was meeting some people at the park in hope of finding relief from financial and personal pressures exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 38-year-old single mother was reported missing by her family on June 17, after they had lost contact with her for two days.

Investigators were not able to determine the identities of the people Lloyd said she hoped to meet. Instead, they found her camping supplies and abandoned car – damaged by an apparently low-angle impact – on a local road outside the park.

On January 31 hikers near Danby Road and Amboy Road in Wonder Valley, not far from Joshua Tree National Park and a few miles away from where her vehicle was found, located human remains that were ultimately identified as Lloyd’s.
