Pleasanton police are investigating the cause of a single-car crash involving a 2018 Tesla Model S Saturday, the vehicle crashing into a signal pole and cement wall and killing the driver.
Officials said they received reports of a crash on Hacienda Drive and W. Las Positas about 5:57 p.m. Saturday, arriving to find the Tesla on fire.
Police said the driver, whose name has yet to be released, was traveling south on Hacienda when, for reasons unknown, he lost control of the car and was killed in the crash. No determination has been made as to whether alcohol or drugs played a role.
Investigators said the Tesla’s battery reignited after it was initially cleared from the accident scene, requiring a second response to douse the flames.
Portions of W. Las Positas Boulevard and Stoneridge Drive were closed for several hours after the crash to facilitate the investigation. Anyone with information related to the collision is encouraged to contact the Pleasanton Police Department Traffic Unit at 925-931-5100.
