Lunchtime patrons dining at a Vacaville bistro got a bit of a show Saturday as police and CHP closed in on a speeding fire truck pilfered from the Oakland Fire Department.
Vacaville police were notified of the chase, covered via this site’s Flash and Social Media interfaces, at 11:31 a.m. after the truck was reported fleeing east on Highway 24 and then onto northbound Highway 680.
The stolen truck was traveling on I-80 Eastbound and “quickly approaching our city” when Vacaville officers assisted in deploying spike strips on I-80 Eastbound at Bella Vista.
Officers said the fire truck’s tires began to deflate after hitting the spike strip and police closed in, the driver – a 31-year-old man from Oakland – exiting at the Orange Drive offramp before colliding into the back of parked car at the Black Oak restaurant.
Police said the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. His name nor the reasoning for his making off with the truck were not revealed.
