A 30-year-old woman was seriously injured in a grinding collision on Bear Creek Road Sunday after the black BMW she was riding in lost control during what witnesses said was a road race with another car of similar description.

California Highway Patrol investigators said a 37-year-old Martinez man was behind the wheel and possibly racing another car at high speeds when his car crashed into a Toyota Prius on Bear Creek near Sandhill Road at about 3:22 p.m.

The second car sped away shortly after the accident, witnesses told NEWS24/680.

The unidentified passenger sustained serious, life threatening injuries in the collision, according to police. The male driver and driver of the Prius suffered very minor injuries, according to the CHP.

Investigators said alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the collision but all charges are pending until completion of the investigation. The woman passenger was taken to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek. Her condition was not immediately known.

  1. I drive this road daily and I would strongly encourage cyclists to avoid it. Since this accident on Sunday (which I avoided being in by all of ten minutes) I have seen evidence of another high speed accident (spin out tire tracks). What a mistake to repave this road, making it even more appealing to the consistent speeders and dangerous drivers.
