UPDATE: Westbound lanes of Highway 24 at Broadway reopened and moving again at 7:36 a.m.
A fatal accident on westbound Highway 24 at the Broadway exit prompted a SigAlert for the area Wednesday, immediately closing all but a single lane of traffic and prompting a backup felt as far as Acalanes Road.
We’re getting multiple inquiries from motorists unaware of the earlier crash, reported at around 5:20 a.m., and would suggest that if you must travel west on Highway 24 today – and aren’t already stuck in traffic – that you consider using BART or alternative route to make your way.
The accident and its cause remain under investigation but a grinding rear-ender collision between two cars was reported with motorists informing emergency personnel that a person appeared to have been ejected, possibly from an SUV that had overturned, and then may have been run over by a silver Toyota Camry.
The victim was identified as 29-year-old Kevin Alleaume of Oakley.
A SigAlert was declared for the area shortly afterward and the slow lane is the only lane currently open, with traffic backing up for miles.
Very sorry to hear someone lost their life in this.
Wondered what was happening. Thanks.
Picked the wrong morning to drive into Berkeley. It looks like we’re moving a little now. Sorry for the driver.
Welll that was pretty crappy. Really slow still. Sad to hear someone died.
As bad as the drive may be it loses its impact when you hear someone died in it. Condolences.
Looked bad. Two cars locked up where you said. they did a great job getting things opened up again.
Got stuck behind it with a lot of other people. Really sorry to hear someone was killed.
