An elderly man died and his wife and son suffered moderate injuries after a fast-moving fire of undetermined origin roared through a home on Mandarin Lane in Walnut Creek early Wednesday morning.

The victim, who has yet to be identified pending notification of family, was described as an older man and one of three people residing in the home at 714 Mandarin.

Contra Costa Fire Protection District Capt. Steve Aubert said the fire was first reported at 12:45 a.m. with the first firefighters on the scene swinging into rescue mode upon arrival. The elderly victim was found unresponsive and two other residents were  transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with injuries ranging from cuts and bruises to smoke inhalation.

Aubert said the cause of the fire is under investigation but that the residence suffered enough fire damage to likely be considered a total loss.
