Pleasant Hill police responded to Sunvalley Boulevard and Santa Monica Drive Friday after witnesses reported hearing gunfire, a man collapse on the street, and a small black car speeding away from the scene.

Responding officers located a man with at least one apparent gunshot wound and quickly sealed off the area. Witnesses reported seeing some evidence of a shooting on the ground nearby.

The incident was reported at approximately 11:35 a.m. and investigators are currently processing the scene and gathering evidence.

A passersby, Carlos Hernández, said he was in the area when he heard what sounded like two muffled gunshots, someone yelling, and the sound of car tires squealing as small black car sped from the area.

“It was very fast,” Hernández said. “I wasn’t sure what I was seeing until I see the man on the ground.”

Pleasant Hill police issued this update:

On Friday May 25, 2018 at approximately 11:32 am PHPD officers responded to the area of Santa Monica Dr near Sunvalley Blvd for the report of gunshots heard and a male on the ground waving for help. Officers responded to the scene and located a 27 year old male victim in the front yard of a residence, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his lower body.

The victim was conscious when transported to a local hospital for treatment. He is in stable condition as of this writing. A preliminary investigation suggests this shooting occurred during an intended purchase of marijuana. There is no current evidence to suggest the suspect(s) involved are local to the neighborhood where this incident occurred. It appears the scene was chosen at random and likely due to its proximity to public areas and the nearby freeway.

At this time suspect(s) have not been identified, but our investigation is ongoing.

Additional details will be shared as they become available and relevant for public release. Anyone with additional information regarding this case is encouraged to contact the PHPD Investigations Division at (925)288-4630.

  1. This is in my neighborhood and the man on the ground who was shot did not appear to be somebody involved with drugs. But that’s just juding the book by its cover.

    • Thanks for writing, Michelle. We’ve had reports that you folks are under a Shelter in Place order but cannot find an official notice of that… can you confirm?
