Police and firefighters and even a team of nearby lifeguards attempted to aid a driver who may have suffered a medical event before his jeep struck a power pole near Monte Vista High School in Danville Tuesday morning.
The crash was reported at around 10:35 a.m. and involved a Jeep driven by Danville resident Anthony Coelho, 69. Witnesses said Coelho’s vehicle struck a power pole on Stone Valley Road, bringing live wires down, as bystanders and emergency personnel sought to reach him. Lifeguards from nearby Monte Vista High brought a defibrillator to the scene and used it until firefighters could arrive.
Chief Allan Shields said Coelho was traveling east when he crashed into a utility pole in front of the high school. The driver was seriously injured in the crash and was transported by paramedics from the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District to Kaiser Permanente Walnut Creek Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Police closed Stone Valley Road at Monte Sereno in order to secure access for emergency vehicles and to aid their investigation into the crash.
Terrible. Condolences to his family.
