Swift water rescue experts and divers reached the battered car belonging to a Tracy teen missing since a car accident sent the vehicle plunging into raging Alameda Creek Saturday.
Divers found Jayda Jenkins’ upended Honda Accord far downstream from where a witness said he saw it go into the water shortly after the accident Saturday. The seat belt was pulled away and the windows broken, according to a fire department spokesman, leading rescuers to believe Jenkins attempted to get out of the car.
Recovery experts called weather and water conditions in the rain-swollen creek “extreme” and are proceeding with appropriate caution.
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and Fremont Fire Department is joined by Dublin CHP, Fremont Police, Alameda County Fire and other state, county and city agencies in the recovery operation.
Conditions of the creek are reminiscent of conditions present in the early 80s, when three boys attempted to raft the waterway with tragic results – flipping the raft at a spillway and drowning after they were caught in the undertow.
