The following has been posted on the Crogan’s/Walnut Creek Facebook page:

Friends of Crogan’s.

It’s with a heavy heart that we announce that after 39 years of business, Crogan’s will officially be closing the doors on Monday, January 23.

Many of you have been following the dealings with Crogan’s and the city of Walnut Creek. Unfortunately, the city has made it clear that they have very specific ideas in mind for what Walnut Creek should be and Crogan’s no longer fits into their narrative. Ultimately, we have been forced to close our doors.

Crogan’s will have modified hours this week: Monday, January 16 – Thursday, January 19, we will be open from 4 p.m. – 12:30 a.m. Next Friday, January 20th – Sunday, 22 we will be open from Noon – 12:30 a.m.

For all of our friends and family who’ve had a meal, a drink, celebrated a big night out with our Crogan’s family. For those of you who worked with/for either our Dad (Wayne) or our Mom (Patsy). For anyone who met their significant other there (I know there are a lot of you), hosted, bussed or bartended. Come help us celebrate.

Please plan to join us as we celebrate 39 years of business, community and family on Sunday, January 22 from 10 a.m. – until close. Complimentary food will be provided. For those who can’t come by Sunday, please come visit us this week, share your memories and bid your favorite bartenders farewell!

Crogan’s is all our family has known and we’re heartbroken to see it come to an end the way it has.

Thank you for the many years of loyal patronage and love.

Onward!

  1. “Unfortunately, the city has made it clear that they have very specific ideas in mind for what Walnut Creek should be and Crogan’s no longer fits into their narrative.”

They just now figured that out? No sympathy here with all the chances they’d been given.

    “I’m never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
    Though it’s easy to pretend
I know your not a fool”

  2. Not sure what the City of Walnut Creek is trying to accomplish by closing Crogans. …whatever riff-raff that supposedly eminated from Crogans will continue to float around WC….What will the City do then? My message to City of WC….be careful what you wish for….

  3. Crogan’s should’ve been closed a few years ago. This isn’t a surprise to anyone, and they have no one to blame but themselves. Good riddance.

  4. Fun when we were young and dumb. But after a while you outgrow the need for beer and bad pickup lines. It will be interesting to see what occiupies the space when they leave.

  5. Alcohol and some humans just don’t mix well. The truth of the matter is that some people go downtown looking for trouble and people who have been drinking sometimes give it to them

  6. I have gone there to party and survived. It’s not on my favorite list of places to go but it was OK. I guess you could turn the downtown area into a strip mall full of ice cream parlors and yoga studios but I think people are going to want to go somewhere to socialize after dark.

  7. I hate to see any business close, especially one that’s been around as long as this one has, but it seems like there is been quite a bit of trouble down there in recent years and they have obviously been warned more than once. You have to ask how much responsibility a business should have for the behavior of their patrons. Barb

  8. It’s an unforgiving business. Someone will always be angry with something you’re doing they feel is wrong. Plus the alcohol and people being people equation. I don’t think I’d want to own a bar these days – too much liability.

  9. Not for me thanks. Those days are waaaay behind me and I didn’t care for them when I was supposed to.

  10. I say good riddance too.
While I frequented this business 30 years ago it has since become a magnet for lower end and troublesome people to Walnut Creek., Wasn’t there even a murder there last year?
Not sorry to see it go!

  11. I have never visited this place but, in general, I think businesses should live or die based on ability to provide value to customers and not based on politicized/discretionary application of regulations. If the mob or the government wants to shut you down, its not hard to find violations of regulations to use as “window dressing” for what seems to essentially be a determination that this business needs to go away.

  12. @Chris, I think that if the business had been providing value to customers they would have been able to remain open, and profitable, even after their hours were restricted. Their business was suffering based on reputation and, from what I’ve read on yelp, an unappealing environment. I honestly don’t believe that a City would want to shut down a business that had been in operation for 39 years. I’ve never visited the place either but have come to the conclusion that they were only able to remain profitable by over serving customers between 12:30am and 2am when customers came in from other clubs that were forced to close earlier. They just weren’t able to survive a level playing field.
