California Highway Patrol officers responded to a rollover accident on Highway 4 in Martinez Friday, arriving to find a stretch of guardrail damaged and a man dead in the wreckage.
Investigators believe the truck was hit from behind by another car, possibly while the driver was slowing to avoid something in the roadway, at 6:06 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Highway 4 just after McEwen Road.
The truck reportedly hit a pole, tore through a section of guardrail, and overturned.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway. The identity of the man pronounced dead at the accident scene has not been released pending notification of relatives.
The driver of the second car, a Ford Focus, was not injured in the crash, stopped afterward and was reportedly cooperating with investigators.
