California Highway Patrol investigators Wednesday said a man struck by a car while running across traffic on northbound I-680 earlier this month has died of his injuries.
The man’s companion that day, a 54-year-old from Grass Valley, was also struck and seriously injured. Her condition has been downgraded from critical to “major injuries” and she is expected to survive, according to the CHP. Her name was not given.
Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office deputies identified the dead man as Cardy Harper, 36, of Danville. Harper died in the hospital two days after he was struck while running across the freeway Oct. 18.
Both Harper and his unidentified companion were struck and seriously injured after abandoning their car after an accident on southbound I-680 and apparently trying to dash across the northbound lanes of the freeway – where they were struck by a passing motorist.
The CHP said their investigation into the accident is ongoing and that they are still unsure why the two ran from the original collision scene and into oncoming traffic. If anyone has information regarding this incident, please contact Contra Costa CHP and investigating Officer Adolphson.
Awful. This past week has been insane.
I guess the Grass Valley woman is our only hope of ever finding out why they did this. I can’t imagine.
According to a comment from a female friend left on another site (that’s connected to this site), he was drunk driving. They ran because he didn’t want a DUI. Sadly, he lost his life. I hope she recovers.
Wow. Thanks so much, Danielle… that would explain things.
Yeah I figured it was something like that. The man was running from something.
Sounds like a plausible explanation but I’m surprised that CHP didn’t mention it.
Leave the car and report it stolen later? Do they take your car away after two DUIs?
