Lafayette police, supported by canine teams trained to detect explosives, conducted an overnight sweep of local schools after a bomb threat was made against Happy Valley Elementary School Tuesday night.
Local authorities said they were notified of a non-specific threat for a “location” in the city by Walnut Creek police around 6 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Police said the name of the school given to Walnut Creek dispatchers did not match any school in Lafayette but that the address given was for Happy Valley. The caller identified the type of device and little else, police said. Lamorinda officers were dispatched to the school and the school district was informed, according to Police Chief Eric Christensen.
Police said about a dozen children taking part in an after-school activity at the school were evacuated, along with their adult coaches. A search of the campus turned up nothing that would present a danger, police said.
Chief Christensen said officers will return to Happy Valley with school staff for another search before classes begin Wednesday. Lafayette police and other law enforcement agencies are analyzing a recording of the original threat and hope to determine who made the call and if that person has made similar calls in the past.
REPEATING: After an extensive overnight search, no devices of any kind were found at Happy Valley or any other local school.
Kids playing games.
Seems to be happening more often lately.
Still going to have to take that math quiz kid.
