Danville: Front Street Park Re-Named In Honor Of Eugene O’Neill – Sept. 11

The Town of Danville, in partnership with the Eugene O’Neill Foundation, will hold a special commemorative event to officially rename Front Street Park as Eugene O’Neill Park on Friday, September 11, at 2 p.m.

The ceremony will celebrate O’Neill’s life and legacy through remarks and poetry readings, with participation from the Eugene O’Neill Foundation, Danville’s Poet Laureate and Youth Poet Laureate, and representatives from New Ross, Ireland. Danville and New Ross are official friendship cities connected through O’Neill’s Irish heritage and his father’s roots near New Ross.

Located on Front Street across from the Danville Community Center and Library, the park already serves as a permanent tribute to O’Neill. The site features commemorative pedestals with bronze lettering and quotations from some of his most recognized works.

Eugene O’Neill, America’s only playwright to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, chose Danville as his home during one of the most significant periods of his career. His time in Danville remains an important part of the Town’s history and helped shape its enduring connection to the arts.

Renaming the park creates a more visible and permanent tribute to O’Neill in Downtown Danville, giving residents and visitors a place to learn more about his life, work, and legacy.
