A motorcyclist was killed in a crash on northbound I680 just south of SR242 on Friday, California Highway Patrol officers closing the key commuter lanes to facilitate their investigation into the fatal crash.

Commuters scrambled to get off the freeway shortly after the four northbound lanes were closed at 6:19p.m. but not before several cars following behind the motorcycle were struck by wreckage and disabled. Police were seen calculating distances and accessing video from camera-enabled vehicles.

The rider was identified by friends and family as Mohammad Erfan, 21.

Witnesses said the motorcyclist was threading through traffic when he lost control of his bike and collided with the center divide.

  1. I remember getting a 24/680 flash on Friday evening about a probable motorcycle fatality. I felt uneasy knowing some family was about to receive news of their loved ones passing. Blessings to the family.

  2. I feel as though there should be more definition on lane splitting (this works be helpful for me as a motorcycle as well as a car driver). The published rules (law?) seems vague. I’ve read language that allows for Lane splitting below 30mph, but I’ve also not seen anything banning it at faster speeds (though as a biker I would never risk it at higher speeds, as things get tricky/risky above 30mph). That said, people do it, and some end up like this, so it would be good to have some clarification…
