Crews of young thieves apparently traveling in cars equipped with stolen license plates attempted another theft at the Broadway Plaza Sunglass Hut in Walnut Creek and doused patrons in pepper spray during a robbery at a consignment store in Orinda Saturday.

There were reports of other attempted thefts, sightings of various crews throughout the 24/680 Saturday. We have no immediate word on if the thefts were coordinated or random events.

Two people are being treated for exposure to the chemical agent after a “blitz”-style raid on Hilton Consignments in Orinda. Patrons and customers were confronted by a group of five young black males believed to be 13 to 18 years of age who smashed display cases with hammers and made off with jewelry – spraying the victims when they entered the store.

An estimated $100,000 in jewelry was stolen.

Police are reportedly searching for a late model Dodge Charger “muscle car” used by the thieves during the theft.

  1. Well, I guess they picked this day to go thru the tunnel and out into the “burbs to do their work.
I’m sure they coordinated with each other because they have a better chance when the police are fully occupied & spead thin….
and luck is on their side, because even if they are caught by the police they are turned loose with little consequence by the DA / Judges.

        • We were all sorry to witness that disgraceful display. The boy holding the door must have been 13-14 and it’s very sad to think of him continuing to grow up with only selfish and unrighteous influences like those other boys.

        • Unpleasant and intolerable. The boy holding the door must have been 13-14. It makes me very sad to think of him continuing to grow older with only selfish and unrighteous influences like the other boys in his life. My wife and I are praying for justice for the owners as well as God’s intervention in the lives of those boys.

  2. Really disturbing that this doesn’t make the local news, or at least I see nothing about it. If it wasn’t for your excellent reporting, we wouldn’t know about these ongoing crimes.

    • Hey, Tracie, and thanks. Not to quibble but WE’RE the Local News, and we leave what other newsgathering agencies are out there to operate as they see fit. We just concentrate on the job at hand.

  3. Corporal punishment needed for these young criminals. A nice whack with a belt that leaves a welt should provide a little incentive not to repeat…
