Level 2 Health Emergency Declared After Fire At Martinez Refining Company Saturday

Fire reported and Level 2 Health Advisory issued to residents near Martinez Refining Company facility, 2000 Marina Vista. Two columns of smoke were immediately seen and muffled “explosions” heard. Refinery reporting a “carbon fire” at the facility.

The smoke plume quickly grew in size, prompting health warnings as it drifted eastward.

Police closed nearby on-ramps due to the health hazard as well as limited visibility. Two people, one reportedly a member of the refinery’s security detail, was evacuated are “under observation” for possible health effects as a result of exposure to the smoke.

A second alarm was declared to assist due to the size and complexity of the scene.
