One Rescued After Fiery Crash On Southbound I680 In Walnut Creek Sunday

SHARE

One person was pulled from the wreckage of his car after a 2-car crash on southbound I680 north of the N. Main exit brought down a light pole and sparked an adjacent vegetation fire in Walnut Creek Sunday evening.

The unidentified motorist was extricated and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of possible burn injuries after two cars – one believed to be a grey Tesla sedan – came into contact and caused a secondary collision between another car and a Toyota SUV, which collided and veered off the freeway.

The crash toppled a light pole and one of the cars burst into flame. Police contacted a nearby car dealership and notified them that the crash had sparked an intense blaze that spread into trees and brush alongside the freeway with secondary explosions visible in a video shot of the crash.

The righthand “slow” lanes of the freeway were closed to accommodate emergency equipment but traffic was able to proceed past the scene.

The crash was reported at 5:38 p.m.

  1. I don’t know what ignited the fire, but that is NOT an EV battery burning brightly. It is highly combustible wood!

    • Give your friend a big hug for me. That light pole almost hit my car as I drove past that accident. It didn’t look like anyone survived in the Tesla, and that was before it caught fire. The Tesla was in a street race on the highway with a gray Lexus before the accident occurred.

      • Hey the car that caught fire was not a Tesla. We got the man out but was seriously injured. One thing I can say about this experience is carry a fire extinguisher in your car you may need it for yourself or someone else in trouble.

        • Hi Shelby, first and foremost thank you from the bottom of my heart for saving our brother.

Our family has been hoping to find you to thank you for saving him, is there anyway we can get in contact?

          • Hello Edgar,

I’m so grateful that you reached out. I had no idea how this turned out for this gentleman and wanted an update to make sure he made it through that event okay. I was one of a handful of people who pulled over that day, along with my girlfriend. I can’t wait to hear the update. God bless your family during this difficult time.

Please feel free to reach out anytime.

        • The man you pulled out is one of my closest friends, a brother to me and Uncle Danny to my daughter. An all-around great human being. Our hearts sank hard to our stomachs when we got the call Sunday late night.

Can’t thank you enough for doing what you did, Shelby.

we are on our way to go visit him at John Muir Walnut Creek

  2. Driving on the freeways these days is getting extremely dangerous. Impatient drivers who don’t realize they are on the road with other drivers with a variety of limitations. Slow reflexes, poor eyesight, on medications, low I.Q. stoned, drunk. The freeways aren’t a race track! Slow down!
