An apparent search for a car used in an armed robbery in Berkeley triggered a brief chase by car and on foot through downtown Lafayette on Wednesday – ending when two men abandoned their car, one detained at gunpoint behind the Park Theater.
As near as we can tell the incident kicked off at about 5 p.m. as police followed a suspect vehicle downtown, attempting to stop it near Lafayette Circle where two men broke from the vehicle and engaged officers in a short foot pursuit – which one man lost when he ran out of his flip flops.
A California Highway Patrol helicopter orbited the scene for several minutes.
Both men, whose names have not been released by police, were taken into custody on suspicion of armed robbery and eventually turned over to Berkeley police.
There were no reported injuries.
Nice work by our CoCo deputies. As usual, ITWWOT, even in Lafayette.

That’s a switch: People doing a crime on the other side of the tunnel and then fleeing this way. ( instead the usual vice -versa ) Its nice though, that here they get caught by PD instead of the reverse, where they slip into oblivion on the other side.
Flip flops? Really, dude?
Love it. More flip flops for crooks!!
Hands up time behind the theatre!!!
If they committed assault (threat of physical harm) in Lafayette, then they should be prosecuted in Contra Costa County, in addition to any charges in Alameda County. Because the State AG’s office has taken over some CHPS prosecutions in Alameda County, there is a possibility that the suspects could be prosecuted there, but unless it is an AG led case, since the Alameda County DA’s office has been gutted, successful prosecutions there are few and far between. Unfortunately, it will take time after Pamela Price’s upcoming recall to reconstitute a functioning office, and the current DA’s failure to take crime seriously causes intense harm to neighboring counties into which the Alameda County crime wave spills.
Believe they were too busy running from John Law to stop and assault anyone. Of course, anyone with information to the contrary is welcome to reach out…
I wonder why they haven’t released their names?
May still be rolling up other suspects but, yes, there are some gaps in this one at the moment.
You guys don’t miss much do you?
We try not to!
Flip- flops? That’s a dead giveaway.
