The attention we pay the unhoused among us here in the privileged 24/680 has singled us out for plaudits and more than a little criticism.

In our tiny little minds the criticism, while minor, has been misdirected. That’s okay, we feel, as it’s not our job to convince you but – perhaps – to show you what is happening in Contra Costa County.

To this end, photographer Sean McDonough has amassed a considerable portfolio of candid photography capturing the lives of folks with nothing more than what they can carry in their carts. An accomplished photographer known for his work in other genres, McDonough says he was motivated to capture this highly mobile, often elusive segment of society and show them in a different light.

For this image McDonough says he was “drawn to the imagery of the juxtaposition of the infrastructure and the neglect, the forgotten space and the lost…”

… and that’s what separates the true professionals from the merely proficient.

McDonough made his picture under the Highway 24 overpass on Pleasant Hill Road.

  1. Particularly tragic is the older woman who has lived in her inoperable car on SB Port Chicago Hwy under Hwy 4 for at least 2 yrs now. Summer heat or Winter cold, she is always there.
