Contra Costa County Fire Protection District’s Truck 1 was struck by a passenger vehicle while blocking I-680 lanes from a previous accident in Walnut Creek at 3:54 a.m. this morning.

A Tesla Model S approaching the scene south of Treat Boulevard crashed into the rear of the fire engine at that time. Crews pronounced the Tesla’s driver, subsequently identified as Genesis Mendoza Martinez, 31, of Pittsburg, dead at the scene with an unidentified passenger extricated and transported to hospital. Four firefighters were also transported for evaluation and damage to the truck was extensive.

It is unclear if drugs or alcohol influence is a factor in this crash, according to the CHP. It could not be immediately determined if the Tesla was being operated with any driver assistance or automation activated at the time of the crash.

The crash is still under investigation. If anyone witnessed it or the events leading up to it, please contact CHP Contra Costa in Martinez, (925) 646-4980

  1. Biggest piece of equipment on the road. Covered in flashing red and blue lights. Firefighters in reflective vests everywhere. And STILL someone manages to hit it. Stunning.

  2. I saw traffic at a standstill early this AM on northbound 680. Also observed the high volume of CHP/LEO and Fire Department personnel. Based upon same, I sensed it was a grave situation. Tragic cirumstances. Cannot help but wonder if autonomous driving system in Tesla played a role.

  3. My biggest fear. Stalling on the freeway and being hit. Sending prayers to all involved. I just can’t imagine what that must have been like.

    • But that’s not what happened. This was a parked firetruck handling an emergency. Lights flashing, emergency personnel on scene. The Tesla didn’t slow down and slammed into them.

  4. Operating status and status of driver (impaired, sleepy) will be critical. I hope the passenger is able to recover and perhaps shed some light on what was happening in that car prior to the crash.
