Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office Overwhelmed by Concealed Weapon Permit Applications

The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors has recently approved additional sergeant and specialist positions for the Office of the Sheriff. They will be used to help handle the backlog of requests for concealed carry weapon (CCW) permits.

Since the Supreme Court ruling in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen on June 23, 2022, the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office has been inundated by requests for CCW permits. The ruling struck down New York’s restrictions on applicants for CCWs to show a compelling need to carry a concealed weapon in public. That meant that similar restrictions requiring applicants to demonstrate “good cause” in some states, like California, were unconstitutional.

Prior to the Bruen decision, the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office would typically receive about 20 CCW applications each month which would be processed by one employee. Since the decision, the Sheriff’s Office has been receiving several hundred applications a month and now has a backlog of over 1,000 CCW applications.

Obtaining a CCW is a multi-step process that requires a detailed application, California Department of Justice fingerprints, background check, interview, and training class. There is also a fee of $160 that is paid after the applicant completes the training class. In addition to new applications, the Sheriff’s Office handles the ongoing renewals for about 500 current CCW holders.

The Sheriff’s Office is now in the process of filling the new positions. We regret the delay and are processing applications as quickly as possible.

  1. $160 is a little steep. Do they have a family plan? Junior is getting bullied over lederhosen for Oktoberfest. We need full family coverage.

    • Another high level intelligence comment. Bravo. Do you deflect with comments about needing a gun due to children being bullied because you don’t want to discuss the real violent crime taking place, often which is reported by this very site? Seems like a weird comment to make in light of what happened in Texas but I guess your goal is to illicit a response instead of actually care about the problem of violence or it’s victims. Some people see it as a serious matter, not a game to joke about. When was the last time you had to walk in a bad area on your way home from work at night? Or do you live in a 3 million dollar house and sit at home all day?

Have you ever once posted on an article on this site actually discussing what happened in the article, or the issue at hand? Literally every time you just post some ridiculous completely loaded generalized comment. It’s a pretty cruddy and weak way to contribute. Come on already.

  2. And Livingston is the only one dragging his feet. Even Santa Cruz is issuing. He is delaying intentionally. It will only end up costing taxpayers as he will lose the multiple lawsuits that are already being prepared against him.

  3. Wheres that fella who always signs off 108rs who was on news 24 680 posting right after the supreme court decision about how the Sheriff was preemptively issuing ccw and made a comment about how Walnut Creek would become a war zone. I knew for a fact he was flat out lying at the time but kept quiet. Maybe thats Livingston himself bored at his desk? Must be nice to be above the law and supreme court.

    • I’m right here. That’s what I had heard from inside sources, maybe Livingston had a change of heart, I don’t know him. It is likely that they are way behind in issuing after decades of denying permits to get in line with the socialist liberal Bay Area.
