The driver of a car believed used in an Oakland carjacking led pursuing officers on a twisty chase from El Sobrante and across two counties Tuesday, perhaps confusing police when he opted to double back on his trail on at least two occasions before crashing in Lafayette.
Two men were eventually taken into custody after the chase began at 10:06 pm, but not before the driver led police across the Benicia Bridge into Solano County, doubled back to run south on I680 and west on Highway 24 before doubling back again and speeding into downtown Lafayette – a CHP helicopter trailing overhead.
The winding pursuit came to an end when the driver struck a car on Woodborough Road in Lafayette, officers moving in to arrest him at the scene. It was at that point, apparently, that officers learned that a second man had apparently rolled out of the fleeing vehicle as it drove through downtown Lafayette.
Officers retraced their routes and, with the help of the orbiting helicopter crew, located and detained the man believed to have jettisoned himself from the car as it passed.
Yippie Ki Yay, it’s the Wild West out there. Nice work by our LEO’s, wonder if Becton will prosecute.
