Witnesses reported a police pursuit from downtown Lafayette Wednesday evening, bystanders watching as a LPD car followed a speeding Nissan on Mt. Diablo Boulevard from Happy Valley Road and onto westbound Highway 24 at around 8:45 p.m.
It was not immediately known why police were interested in the car, its driver fleeing west on Highway 24 at speeds estimated at 100 miles per hour. Readers reported seeing the car make it into the Caldecott Tunnel and continue its flight west. Local police are believed to have called off their chase, and it was not known if Berkeley police or other jurisdictions continued the pursuit on their end.
Witnesses said the car crashed and caught fire on the College Avenue offramp. The whereabouts and custody status of the driver could not be immediately determined.
Is it time to add remote controlled spike strips to the westbound tunnels?
GREAT IDEA!!!
They already have barrier arms on the good side of the new tunnel so it should be easy to add spike strips…
Of course we need more information. But, if the suspect car and individuals are guilty of a crime, let’s hope they died in the fiery crash. 108RS
Yikes! You’re a tough judge!
Judge? That wish is well outside of jurisprudence.
I actually agree with Jeff! I thought the same thing!
Sorry, but the criminals have got to be reeled in…..right now there’s no consequences for their crimes.
Both you and Jeff are disgusting people for wishing death on anyone….
