A man carrying what was subsequently learned to be a replica firearm was shot and killed by police at Fred Jackson Way and Market Avenue in North Richmond Wednesday, witnesses reporting the man “acting strangely” and handling the replica as if it were a real weapon.
Neighbors called police about the man after he was spotted playing with the replica’s magazine, carrying the toy gun in plain view.
San Pablo police officers arrived on the scene and confronted the individual, ordering him to put down what they believed to be a real gun, and eventually opening fire when he simulated a move to “rack” the weapon to prepare it for discharge.
The unidentified man was hit several times by police gunfire and then given life-saving first aid as officers moved in to find that his gun had been deliberately altered to resemble an actual weapon.
