Lamorinda police responded to a reported theft from a postal delivery van on Miramonte Drive in Moraga Monday.
A citizen reported seeing an unfamiliar man in the vehicle at around 10:27 a.m. Police from Moraga, Orinda, and Lafayette descended on the area after a canvas of area cameras revealed that two men, one behind the wheel of an older model silver or grey Chevy Tahoe, the other approaching the delivery van – had made off with trays of mail.
Moraga Police Chief Jon King said the pair appeared to be Hispanic males but that investigators are hoping to access additional cameras in neighboring areas before narrowing their description.
The van’s driver was not injured, according to police.
So that’s where my stimulus check went
Stealing mail in big trays directly from the truck? Well I guess that beats stealing from one mailbox at a time.
What do you want to bet that both of these guys probably have done this before and were released by the DA or a kind-hearted judge, only to continue their chosen field of crime. I say * Lock ’em all up again! *
@Gregor – This crime is not within the district attorneyās exclusive remit. Mail theft is a federal offense subject to a five year stretch in Club Fed. See, 18 U.S. Code Ā§ 1708. If these clowns actually do anything nefarious with the stolen mail ā other than littering with paper airplanes or profane origami ā theyāll likely be prosecuted for mail fraud as well. See 18 U.S. Code Ā§ 1341 (a defendant convicted of mail fraud faces up to 20 years in the clink).
The U.S. Attorney, not local DAsā offices, prosecute federal crimes. (They could also be subject to prosecution for theft, auto burglary and presumably fraud under state law, at the discretion of the DA or AGās office.)
Guess that beats going mailbox to mailbox.
If your going to steal my mail the least you can do is pay my bills!
