The incident was reported at 10:46 p.m. and officers contacted a motorist believed to have struck the individual, spotted walking in traffic shortly before they were struck.
The victim was identified by Coroner’s deputies Tuesday as Rebecca Pulling, 42, of Lafayette.
Investigators from the California Highway Patrol said their offices were advised of a pedestrian in the lanes of I-680 southbound, within a construction zone, just north of N. Main Street in Walnut Creek at that time. Before emergency personnel could reach her Pulling had been struck by a vehicle while within the lanes of traffic and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
CHP investigators said the area where this incident occurred was an active construction zone with the far left lane (#1 lane) closed off by orange cones and also the far right lane (#7 lane) closed off by orange cones. CHP was initially notified by a worker within the construction zone that a pedestrian was walking on the freeway. Officers said the pedestrian had walked out into the lanes of traffic (#4 lane) on southbound I-680 and was struck by a Chrysler Sebring, sustaining fatal injuries. The driver of the Sebring was not injured, was cooperative and remained on scene for the investigation.
It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision regarding the pedestrian but it is still under investigation.
