As family members have indicated here, a 29-year-old Concord man struck and killed by a car on Highway 24 near Fish Ranch Road early Saturday had stopped his car to assist his wife after her car broke down.
Investigators said the victim was standing with his wife on the shoulder of eastbound Highway 24 at about 3 a.m. when he stepped into the slow lanes of the freeway to retrieve a piece of property. At that moment, investigators say, a woman driving a Nissan Leaf came upon the scene, was unable to avoid the victim and struck him, inflicting fatal injuries.
The driver of the Nissan remained at the scene and was suspected of driving under the influence, according to the CHP. Following further investigation, the unidentified driver was arrested for Felony DUI.
Investigators determined that alcohol was a contributing factor for the driver of the Nissan. No determination was made relative to the pedestrian victim of the collision. Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, (925) 646-4980.
How tragic.
Condolences.
