Solano County CHP investigators are trying to determine how an Infiniti SUV ended up on its roof near C&H Sugar, killing four people, and are looking into reports that witnesses saw the vehicle “come off” the Carquinez Bridge after some sort of an incident there around 8:43 p.m.
Four young people were in the vehicle at the time, according to investigators, with a young woman at the wheel when the vehicle veered out of control and went over the elevated portion of eastbound I80 (Carquinez Bridge), east of Pomona Street.
Initial information is that a young woman was behind the wheel at the time of the crash. Also in the vehicle was a 22-year-old woman, a 19-year-old man, and a 21-year-old man.
The vehicle plunged approximately 150 feet, hit a stationary freight train before eventually coming to rest on its roof near the C&H Sugar Factory.
CHP Solano Area officers are currently investigating why the vehicle lost control, veered across all lanes of traffic, collided with a concrete barrier wall of the bridge and then went over the side. It is currently unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
Another driver was able to provide Dash Cam footage of the crash.
The CHP is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or who has information about events leading up to it to please call 707.428.2100.
The California Highway Patrol reminded drivers to slow down following the crash as officers are seeing “a significant increase in speeds of over 100 mph” in recent weeks.
