Among the 13 Bay Area fitness clubs San Ramon-based 24 Hour Fitness intends to close as part of its announced filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection are two in Alamo and Walnut Creek.

The Ygnacio Center and Alamo Plaza locations are among 100 gyms closing permanently nationwide as a result, corporate officials said, of financial damage caused by shelter-in-place restrictions imposed in March.

The company has recently started reopening some of its locations as new safety guidelines designed to inhibit the spread of COVID-19 have eased.

“COVID-19 and its disproportionate impact have significantly affected both our industry and our company operations,” 24 Hour Fitness said, in a statement. “If it were not for COVID-19 and its devastating effects, we would not be filing for Chapter 11.”

A total of 42 locations are closing around California. Company officials said that when all is said and done the closings will leave the business with about 300 clubs around the country.
