Officials with the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District have confirmed that one person died in a two-alarm fire at the Keys Apartments complex at 410 N. Civic Drive Saturday morning.
Police and firefighters responded to a report of fire alarms tripping at the complex at approximately 5:22 a.m., saw no immediate evidence of fire and commenced a search of the complex. Residents and security personnel reported smoke on the upper floors of the complex and eventually traced the source of the smoke to a third floor apartment – finding the victim there.
The deceased was identified Monday as Richard Canal Sr., 73.
Fire officials have not released the cause of the blaze or confirmed that it appeared to have originated in the apartment’s kitchen area. It remains under investigation, they said.
A dog found in Canal’s apartment was treated for “injuries,” but it is unknown if those injuries consisted of burns or smoke inhalation.
Terrible. Condolences.
O no! My parents used to have friends who lived there. Very sad news.
