Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Closed In Both Directions Thursday Due To Falling Concrete

Authorities in Marin County and on the Richmond side of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge are reporting massive traffic jams and drivers leaving their cars after falling concrete from the upper to lower deck prompted closure of the bridge in both directions.

One lane of the bridge was reopened in both directions at 2:40 p.m. and engineers were hoping to have the entire span reopened in time for the evening commute.

Residents reported heavy traffic on neighboring surface streets as commuters sought out alternative routes.

They closed it just after I made it across this morning. I’m not saying I felt anything was wrong but I’m always nervous on bridges.

Another reminder of how dependent we are on certain roadways in the bay area. If one fails so do others. I have never seen so much traffic and hope to never again.

I commuted over that bridge every day five years ago, and enjoyed the views, but was told that it was literally ‘falling apart’ back then.
