The Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office are investigating the death of a San Ramon man found unresponsive in a holding cell at the Martinez Detention Facility Saturday night.

An inmate, identified as 26-year-old Karthik Kandaswamy of San Ramon, died despite staff efforts to revive him, according to a sheriff’s spokesman. Kandaswamy had been arrested by San Ramon Police for battery and resisting arrest earlier in the day.

Investigators said that Kandaswamy was contacted by San Ramon police on a trail not far from a residence on Campechi Court after they were notified of an agitated person at the home.

Officers talked with Kandaswamy and eventually took him into custody, summoning paramedics to evaluate him at the scene before taking him to a local hospital for further examination. He was eventually transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, according to police.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jimmy Lee said that at around 11:27 p.m. jail deputies were alerted to a medical emergency in holding room and located Kandaswamy, who was reportedly unresponsive. Staff performed life-saving measures on the inmate until paramedics arrived, Lee said, but the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

      • It sounds like every step was taken to check this man out medically along the way. Was there anything done during the arrest that may have triggered a medical event of some kind or did he have a history of illness? Very strange and it does seem to happen a lot.
