Motorists on Willow Pass Road in Concord were treated to an unusual sight a little after 2 p.m. Wednesday as a man at the controls of a stolen construction excavator whizzed by at 8 mph – police in hot pursuit.

Officers pursued the backhoe through the city for approximately 20 minutes, closing various roadways to separate the backhoe from the people on the road. The driver ended up on Willow Pass Rd. towards Highway 4 and with the assistance of the California Highway Patrol, the on and off ramps were closed along with all of Willow Pass Rd. between Landana and Highway 4 so the backhoe could be isolated. The driver eventually stopped the backhoe near the entrance to eastbound Highway 4 and was taken into custody by police.

Concord police said they determined that the backhoe was an unreported stolen piece of equipment and they were eventually able to return it to the rental company without damage.

The driver, a 39-year-old man from Richmond, was arrested and booked at the Concord Police Department for auto theft, evading and obstructing arrest.

There were no reports of injuries but there were plenty of amazed looks. Video Credit: Kelsey
