Firefighters implemented a HazMat response protocol after a chemical was found leaking from at least one rail car on a siding in Martinez Thursday.
The discovery was made at around 10:50 a.m. and safety protocols enacted shortly afterward as both county fire and railway officials worked to identify the leaking substance and what, if any, threat it imposed.
A safety cordon enforced at the scene, roughly at Embarcadero and Berrellessa in the city, is slowly being pulled down (11:54 a.m.).
Rail service through the area was briefly halted as crews worked to assess the situation.
