Officials in Alameda County have identified the driver of a Model S Tesla that crashed through a fence and into a pond in a remote stretch of Crow Canyon Road Sunday as Keith Leung, 34, of Danville.
Investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash reported at 8:31 p.m. Sunday, Leung’s car plunging off the road and into a small pond at 11567 Crow Canyon Road in Castro Valley.
A California Highway Patrol spokesman said investigators are looking into the cause of the crash, trailering the wreckage of Leung’s Model S to a local tow yard for further examination. The CHP is looking into whether speed was a factor at the time of the crash as well as whether the car’s autopilot feature was activated when the car left the road.
Leung was a talented musician who sat in with a variety of local orchestras and bands and who played clarinet with the Danville Community Band, friends said.
Used to ride horses out there. Hope they are able to find out what happened.
How long did he have the car? I personally think a lot of these crashes are the result of new drivers out there taking the auto out to “see what it can do.”

What happens when those batteries are submerged in water?
Nothing. They’re sealed. There was recently a test where the Tesla battery pack was submerged for an extended period. It had no issues and worked fine when tested after submersion. It’s why you can see Teslas driving through fairly deep pools of water without issue.
