A very busy night in the 24/680 was punctuated by calls and other reports of a loud explosion in downtown Lafayette shortly after midnight. Although several people actually went out to pinpoint the origin of the blast, no source was found at press time.
Several readers remarked about hearing the blast on our Facebook page and we’re working to see what was behind it.
We’ll have more information when it surfaces.
It was loud. Like an M80 but close.
Shook the house.
Seemed like it was at Moraga and Moraga Boulevard.
It was big. Thought it was a transformer.
whoa indeed! That was something.
Fireworkds? Big fireworks??
Haven’t you been getting calls for some time about explosions downtown News680/24?
@Sue – We have actually, yes.
I’ll wait for the smoke plume before I start to worry.
Definitely not a truck running over a pothole. There was a shockwave.
Another thing to worry about.
Something going on in Orinda? Moraga Way and Overhill?
@AMiller – Car accident? What are you seeing?
That’s it I’m staying in.
Russians!!! I like vodka well enough. Just don’t make me eat any of those damn fish eggs.
Swamp gas. It would explain the pulsing blob of light hovering above my house.
@Bob – Ha! We want to believe…
Didn’t hear a thing. And we have our own problems down here with earthquakies and bad drivers!
You’ve had past reports of explosions like this one?
@W – We have, with the last one (with multiple reports) coming in about 10 months ago. Definitely something more than “fireworks” or “delivery trucks slamming their doors.”
Whatever it was it had my full attention.
“A few household chemicals in the right proportion.”
