Hundreds of Pleasant Hill residents were ordered to shelter in their homes and not venture outside late Friday and into Saturday morning after reports reached police of a man, reportedly carrying an assault-type rifle and wearing a ballistic vest, walking on Boyd Road at 10:31 p.m.
On Saturday, officers detained a a 33-year-old resident of an apartment complex where the man was seen. The man gave himself up to police without a struggle at about 11:30 a.m. and is being evaluated by mental health experts.
Detectives are working to obtain a warrant for the man’s apartment as they continue their search for the rifle and vest. He has not been arrested but is being held for a health evaluation.
Heavily armed police, later supported by police helicopters, sealed off the area of the apartment complex and were able to confirm that there was an armed man – as described – in front of an apartment complex.
An armed posture was taken and a perimeter was established as officers continued their search for the man, according to Lt. Dave Nichols. The shelter-in-place order was then issued to residents living in the vicinity.
The Central County Regional SWAT team was activated and completed a search of the apartment complex at 100 Boyd Road and the surrounding areas. The subject was not located and his identity is currently unknown. He is described as a white male adult, approximately 5’6” with brown hair and a light beard. He was wearing a dark beanie cap, camouflage pants and a black ballistic vest.
The shelter-in-place advisory was lifted early Saturday morning.

If he has mental health issues, I hope they remove any weapons he has, but it seems that he, at most, might be guilty of a misdemeanor unless DA can prove the gun was loaded. Unloaded open carry of a rifle was not even a crime until Gov. Brown signed a new law to make it a misdemeanor.
