From the California Highway Patrol:
On Saturday October 28, 2017, at approximately 11:23 PM, CHP – Contra Costa Area officers were notified by dispatch that a concerned citizen had reported seeing a white Nissan pickup truck (license plate 97614H2) with a white male passenger with a handgun firing gunshots out of the vehicle, near I-680 and SR-24.
The witness continued to give updates as the vehicle transitioned onto northbound SR-242. Our CHP units got into position to intercept the vehicle on eastbound SR-4 at San Marco. Shortly thereafter, our officers spotted the vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle.
Our Officers caught up with the vehicle and confirmed that it was indeed the white suspect Nissan truck. Our Officers requested additional units respond to assist with the stop. The suspect vehicle exited SR-4 at Loveridge Road and began traveling northbound on Loveridge Road. It then made a right turn onto North Park Boulevard and pulled into the WinCo parking lot. A felony enforcement stop was conducted and the driver was detained without incident. The officers then attempted to remove the passenger from the vehicle. As soon as the passenger stepped out of the vehicle, he fled from the scene on foot placing his hands in front of him near his waistband area. The officers gave chase on foot, along with several Pittsburg Police Department units who were arriving on scene to assist, and were able to catch up to the suspect near the Home Depot next to WinCo.
The suspect physically resisted arrest and had to be forcefully taken into custody. The suspect was transported to Sutter Delta to receive medical attention and then discharged back into CHP custody.
During a subsequent search of the suspect vehicle, a 9 MM handgun, matching the description provided by the witness, was located in the center console of the vehicle. Two ammo magazines were also located along with spent shell casings and live rounds of ammo. A significant amount of marijuana individually bagged was located in the vehicle along with a scale, and approximately $2,200.00. The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office has been notified and this investigation is still pending.
REMINDER; The public witnessing of these types of incidents and then calling 911 to report it with accurate details and locations were key in this incident and always a very important element of CHP finding suspects committing crimes on our roadways. Thank you!
What next?
@Kris – Wish we knew, Kris. Buffing the Crystal Ball as we speak.
Nice catch. You have to wonder where those rounds went.
Reason number 1 for why I don’t honk at people any more.
