A Lafayette woman is in custody on arson and attempted murder charges Monday after allegedly setting fire to a boarding residence she lived in with others on Betty Lane.

Lisa Stevens, 53, was arrested on suspicion of arson of an inhabited dwelling and attempted first-degree murder, investigators said. She is being held in lieu of $750,000 bail.

Investigators were called to the scene of a fire at a home in the 3300 block of Betty Lane on Friday afternoon after firefighters arrived to find the residence fully engulfed by flame. One occupant was sent to a local hospital with burns as firefighters battled the blaze, bringing it under control after about a half hour.

Police determined than an argument between Stevens and another resident preceded the blaze, with the pair arguing until one person barricaded themselves in a lower floor bedroom. It was at that point, investigators said, that Stevens allegedly splashed an accelerant on the door and wall and set it ablaze – a fire that ignited the door and wall and subsequently spread to the entire home.

A boarding residence? I hope airbnb isn’t “on deck.” Sometimes it’s hard enough to live with the ones you love, yet alone taking in others. Wow.

… and always wise to keep accelerants out of the domestic equation.

I live in this neighborhood and according to the next door neighbor, the behavior and fire was a result of the perpetrator being high on drugs.
