Suspect In Orinda Beating Case Arrested By U.S. Marshals; Attempted Murder Charges Filed

Falealea Tytus Maka, from pictures released in Utah after he was connected to two robberies there.

The suspect in a recent attempted homicide in Orinda has been arrested, according to information released by the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff. Falealea Tytus Maka, 21, was detained last Wednesday by a US Marshals’ Fugitive Task Force and the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff Warrant Service Unit.

On February 13, 2016, Maka was involved in a fight with a man identified by friends and family members as Michael Jerrido, Jr., also 21, outside a house party on Camino Encinas in Orinda. Investigators said Jerrido was knocked unconscious, with witnesses saying Maka continued to beat him as he lay on the ground.

Jerrido, a football player attending Chabot College in Hayward, remains in serious condition at a hospital in Oakland as family members attempt to arrange for his transport back home to Largo, Fl.

A GoFundMe account started for this purpose currently has more than $30,000 in donations from friends and strangers alike.

Police said that a warrant for attempted homicide was issued for Maka shortly after the attack, with investigators determining he also had an outstanding arrest warrant in Utah for home invasion and armed robbery.

Maka reportedly divided his time between San Leandro and Utah. He was detained in an unincorporated part of San Leandro and was later booked at the Martinez Detention Facility on charges that include attempted murder. His bail is set at $2 million.

Detectives have filed the case with the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office. The DA’s Office has filed formal charges against Maka.

Anyone with any information on this case is asked to contact the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff Investigation Division at (925) 313-2634. For any tips, please email: tips@so.cccounty.us or call (866) 846-3592 to leave an anonymous voice message.

  1. Thas bullshit theres video showin black guy woolfin wanting to fight maka so maka dropped him after he swung first. The video also shows maka walk away where the dude dropped. My lil cousin gon beat this bullshit. As for the victim i mean u got what u asked for now u see we the real bay. Free my brodie lay ofa lahi atu tokoua we all gon be rite behind every step of the way till u free.

  2. Somehow I think if there was video of this it would have surfaced by now. He managed to elude police for a pretty long time. Glad there’s some resolution to it now. We’ll see what happens.

  3. Sorry but with this new information I think its fair to revisit a comment made at the start of this whole sordid mess that earned the poster a lot of scorn and condemnation.

“Think this was a car party on the street with a fight that ended up in the parking space of a home there. Thinking some kids were looking for an isolated place to party and load up and something happened. Cell photo looks more San Leandro or San Pablo than one of our locals.”

Pretty much nailed it. Sorry to hear the other kid is still in the hospital. That doesn’t sound good at all.

  4. Mike, this was not a car party. This was a HOUSE PARTY where an Orinda homeowner rented out his home for $875-cash. Try to keep up. The victim and suspect were at the house party according to ABC 7 News.

  5. The house was the venue. They got here by car and were racing up and down the neighborhood as reported by neighbors that morning. Overlooking your snarkiness.

  6. Agree with Teresa. Police should have been called as soon as cars racing down residential street.
Very dangerous situation. And this house party rental thing is a recipe for more of the same.

  7. You don’t live in Orinda. This is a concern for the residents of Orinda as well as the Orinda City Council.

  8. Beginning to sound like a sideshow that was just looking for a place to party – with freeway access. Homeowner made a mistake and took the cash and they probably squeezed them into accepting it. And two young guys made even bigger mistakes. Glad they caught the person believed responsible. We’ll see what happens in court.

  9. They probably came to Orinda simply because there was a house for rent for a day at a time. This practice must stop and if I was an owner I would still be worrying it’s some kind of liability is going to come my way. Wake up greedy folks.

  10. Being totally unfamiliar with airbnb I would ask if the Orinda home was the ONLY one between Lamorinda and San Leandro made available on a day to day basis? I thought there would be more availability I guess.

  11. The airbnb host sets the conditions for renting. Minimum number of nights, cleaning fee, security deposit (if any), etc. Cash is never part of the equation. These partiers were looking for a weak link and found one. All renters and tenants are rated. It is reckless to rent to an unrated party in this manner, and reckless to circumvent the airbnb payment policy, just as it would be on Ebay, for example. SO GLAD that they found and arrested the violent man who did this.
(Sent from my airbnb in Old Town ABQ tonight. I saw the Jesse Pinkman house today and Hank and Marie’s, although that is not where I am staying.)

  12. And no, I can’t say which is better, the red or the green New Mexico chile salsa. I am told that doesn’t matter. It is the journey that counts.

  13. Terrible situation. I wonder what percentage of airbnb’s ~40M transactions/year end like this. I assume the objective answer is much closer to 0.0% than some are suggesting.

  14. We are left to assume the victim in this case is in a coma or on life support? Just terrible. And is it standard procedure to withhold a victim’s name in a case like this?

  15. Back to the earlier comment from Jay Tee: “Thas bullshit theres video showin black guy woolfin wanting to fight maka so maka dropped him after he swung first.”

He claims there’s video, but maybe it’s unknown to investigators? Is Jay Tee’s comment a lead worth forwarding to police (along with his provided contact info / IP address to post on this site)?

  16. @GF. I think if there is video we would have seen it by now. Is the really grainy photo of the suspect taken that night from a video or a snapshot??

  17. After the fiasco happened Airbnb put out a statement that the house in question, while having been listed on their site, had not been rented through them on the night in question but they’d removed it from their listings anyway.

  18. There but for Gods Grace go I…. could have happened so many times in my youth. And lives changed forever. Very sad.

  19. I believe this is where Chevy Chase interrupts Emily Litella’s misguided rant about attempted murder at the airbnb with the pertinent fact that this wasn’t an airbnb rental, and she responds cheerfully “Nevermind!” We do SO love you Emily for your sense of civic duty.

  20. Idk if anyone has been following this story, but after almost a year Mike was brought back home on 1/10/17. (Thanks to David Jolly)
