A reported carjacking incident in the Safeway parking lot at 11060 Bollinger Canyon Rd. ended badly for the alleged perpetrator early Saturday after police surrounded his purloined vehicle and arrested him at gunpoint.
Paul Lodestein, 20, described as a transient with prior contacts with law enforcement in Hayward and Fairfield, was taken into custody at Bollinger Canyon at Alcosta Blvd., according to San Ramon Police Lt. Cary Goldberg. Police said Lodestein was allegedly driving westbound on Bollinger in the victim’s car shortly after the initial incident was reported at 2:37 a.m. when he was spotted and surrounded.
He was booked at the Main Detention Facility in Martinez for carjacking, Goldberg said.
Police said the suspected carjacker was reportedly armed with a handgun when he allegedly demanded the victim’s car and a gun of undetermined type was recovered during the arrest. The victim was not injured during the incident. A red SUV was also identified as a possible suspect vehicle but was not located, according to police.
Goldberg said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
