Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-CA14) announced he was suspending his run for the California governor’s office Sunday after allegations of sexual and financial impropriety began to surface.

“To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past.
I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s,” Swalwell wrote in a post announcing suspension of his candidacy.

Swalwell’s decision further roiled the already turbulent waters of the campaign to lead the nation’s most populous state.

Swalwell’s announcement followed allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman twice, including when she worked for him, that were published Friday in the San Francisco Chronicle and later by CNN.
