The City of Lafayette hosted a gathering recognizing completion of the first mural in the city’s Downtown Mural Program on Monday.
Lafayette native and artist Rachel Perls kicked off the downtown art project with her interpretation of the native Matilija poppy, currently growing on the west-facing wall of Zahra Boutique Salon, 3578 Mt. Diablo Boulevard.
Nice work, Rachel, really livens up that wall!

Puts me in mind of Albuquerque but nicely done
The floral selection or the mural? And we thought she nailed it, too…
The blue sky, of course, and the sparseness, the emptiness evoked ABQ for me. Regardless, it is beautifully executed to this amateur eye.
What an improvement over the public art committee’s previous choices: the pile of Dinosaur Turds in the library stairwell, the Revolting Red wall images above them, Blazing Tiddlywinks…. I’ll stop here. But hurray for the birdhouses!
“Dinosaur Turds…” Don’t stop, don’t stop… we’re looking for an art critic!
Very pretty!
The mural is lovely and happy. Way better than a blank wall. We need variety in our cities.
Thank you. Public art has so many benefits. Interesting if you read about them. One of the most rewarding community projects I’ve helped organize was an art trail. People loved it.
Gorgeous! I admire her work.
Lovely. More plese.
i enjoyed seeing this. the more art in our lives, the better.
Nicely done!
