Letter: Choosing Our Targets And That Whole “Increased Lethality” Thing

Editor;

Since September, this administration has struck 30 boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific Ocean in a supposed effort to crack down on drug trafficking — our leaders and military ordering the execution of unknown people without evidence or benefit of trials.

This approach, by the president’s own admission, has apparently shifted to land-based targets in a sovereign nation as his war on fentany…. cocaine…. oil tankers broadens in scope.

While a former conservative TV anchor puffs and struts, spouting terms like “increased lethality” and “warrior ethos” like a teenage boy during a Call of Duty session, our current president boasts about saving Americans from fentanyl addiction actually reaching the country from China – while crowing about “double tapping” ship survivors into chum. All this while our elected leaders excuse the likes of Russ Ulbricht, who was sentenced to life in prison after founding the world’s largest online drug marketplace, and now Juan Orlando Hernández, who allegedly said he wanted to ‘shove the drugs right up the noses of the gringos by flooding the United States with cocaine.’

Unlike the fisherman running — something — from Venezuelan ports in open boats, Hernández was sentenced to 45 years in prison after bringing 400 tons of cocaine into the U.S. And although we were told the second strike was called in on survivors clinging to flotsam in the middle of the ocean because they were “attempting to contact other members of their group” the video of this second strike has not been produced.

Instead there appear to be no government plans to actually make our communities safer, only ridiculous—and likely corrupt—schemes to reward wealthy criminals able to pay off their jailers. This is disgusting and incomprehensible and I for one am embarrassed this painfully stupid and obvious attempt at regime change is being conducted in my name.

Sincerely,

Ray Masur/Concord
