A “prolific thief” suspected of cruising Bay Area schools in search of teachers’ credit cards was arrested following his incursion at a Fremont elementary school and linked to similar cases in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Solano and Yolo counties.

Police identified their suspect as Christopher Britton, 34, of Fairfield and said he routinely walked onto Bay Area school campuses in search of credit cards – which he later used to run up fraudulent purchases at local stores.

Though Britton had a demonstrated knack for accessing campuses while searching for his target of choice, police said he was confronted and questioned by school staff in Fremont in October, providing “conflicting explanations” for being at the school and leaving abruptly.

During a subsequent investigation, police identified Britton as the man responsible for breaching several school campuses, rifling the belongings of staff and using pilfered credit cards to purchase goods.

A Fremont school resource officer conducting a follow-up activity in Walnut Creek Nov. 3 found Britton returning a rental vehicle believed to have been used in one of the burglaries. Britton was arrested after he allegedly attempted to flee.

According to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, Britton is being held at the West County Detention Facility without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 14.
