A Caltrans worker struck by a truck hauling asphalt in a construction closure on Highway 4 in Martinez Wednesday died later of injuries sustained in the collision.
The worker was identified as Mahdi Khorram, 39, a Caltrans construction inspector, husband, and father a 3-year-old child.
Khorram was struck at about 10:35 p.m. Wednesday at the construction zone, just before the McEwen offramp, according to the CHP. He was rushed to an area hospital but died of his injuries.
Gov. Gavin Newsom released a statement marking Khorram’s death, the 195th Caltrans worker to be killed on the job since 1921, on Thursday:
“Jennifer and I are deeply saddened to learn of the death today of Caltrans worker Mahdi Khorram. An employee since 2023, Mahdi was a dedicated public servant committed to making our roads safer for all Californians. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues mourning this terrible tragedy.”
The governor’s office said flags at the state Capitol and Capitol Annex will be lowered to half-staff in honor of Khorram.
