A fire in a planter box at businesses in a building at 1616 Bonanza Street put up enough smoke to trigger a second alarm, evacuations and a major response from firefighters.
Smoke was reported in the area at 2:30 pm but the origin was not initially determined, firefighters eventually tracing the origin of the blaze to a cigarette discarded in a planter box.

We’re running low on Darwin Awards around here.

Still ticks us off we lost that one… so many others, too.
Why they still need to have receptacles for cigarettes etc. There are people who still smoke, whether we like it or not.
Why have them when smoking is banned in that area?

Fair point. Back to you, Fj…
I understand your point, but if they started the fire with the smoldering object that they ignited aren’t they responsible? Including the responsibility for finding a non-flammable receptacle for their litter?
Totally agree, they should be responsible. You break the law and subsequently damage something, pay up!
Take a page from San Francisco and have receptacles for extinguishing smokes. Duh.
Let San Francisco be our model? The street litter in SF, man-made and man-laid, is considerably more hazardous than smoldering butts! Can’t we even aspire to something greater than free needles and safe disposal of sharps and butts? I mean, Jesus fucking homo sapiens! There is no one but us to save us!
People who smoke are in constant need of “receptacles”, which they don’t carry on their person. Eventually they start throwing butts out the car window and emptying ash trays in parking lots. Not long after they start voting Libertarian and some conehead named Andreesen becomes our ruler. It is our fearsome destiny.
